25 Years of Mathematical Gazette Problem Corner
by The Mathematical Association

This book celebrates 25 years of Problem Corner, an ever-popular feature of the Gazette since it was introduced by the then Editor, Victor Bryant. All the problems from 1981 to 2005, together with solutions, are included: they have been lightly edited for stylistic consistency and are classified by theme for the convenience of readers. Above all, this volume is a tribute to the fertile mathematical imaginations of those many Gazette readers who both proposed the problems and submitted their solutions. It will appeal to all who enjoy the challenge of solving interesting mathematical problems.

Can You Prove It
by Sue Waring

Mathematics which is proof-orientated develops pupils’ ability to reason logically and deepens their understanding of mathematical concepts. The lesson plans and class discussions about proof described in this book help teachers to embed proof into all aspects of mathematics. At KS2 pupils learn about proof through pattern. At KS3 all mathematical properties, such as angle facts, are justified and pupils explain the structure of patterns. At KS4 pupils learn to write short chains of deductive reasoning and some are introduced to formal proofs. There are three different approaches to incorporating proof at KS5. This edition includes a section on writing formal proofs (chapter 4), and other minor updates.

Career Patterns of Secondary Maths Teachers (FREE)
by The Mathematical Association

FREE Publication (shipping costs apply). This research report was commisioned by the Mathematical Association and funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. The smith inquiry (2004) highlighted the serious shortage of well-qualified secondary mathematics teachers. In response to the Smith Inquiry recommendations, initiatives have been set up to increase the recruitment of new secondary mathematics teachers, but the Teaching Committee of the Mathematical Association feels strongly that it is also bery important to investigate why experiences secondary mathenatics teachers leave teaching and to see what might be done to retain them. The purpose of this research was to perform an initial, small-scale investigation ino the factors that influence secondary mathematics teachers' decisions to leave teaching to make preliminary recommendations and to pave the way for more large-scale government research into the issue of retaining secondary mathematics teachers.

Continued Fractions - A Popular Survey
by The Mathematical Association

If your study of elementary Number Theory has kindled an interest in the fascinating subject of Continued Fractions, you may welcome an opportunity to explore many topics more deeply. The theory bristles with opportunities for the making and investigation of conjectures. If, on the other hand, your knowledge of the subject is sketchy, this book should provide a gentle and systematic introduction, with plenty of illustrative examples and tables, without being, in any sense, a conventional academic treatise.

Dictionary of Mechanics
by Janet Jagger

For the first time, mathematicians and physicists have agreed on definitions and statements of the concepts and terms found in most first courses in mechanics. It will be helpful to a wide range of students from Years 12 and 13 in school to first-year undergraduates and higher-education students. Teachers will find the fuller account of the terms particularly useful, especially if mechanics is not their main teaching subject. The dictionary, produced by members of The Mathematical Association and Institute of Physics, contains 144 entries with about 40 diagrams.

Hurdles and Strategies in the teaching of Algebra
by Tony Barbard

As all teachers of mathematics will know, the teaching of algebra is not straightforward and mistakes occur all too often. This book looks at, and tries to provide constructive suggestions to resolve, a wide range of errors. The bulk of the material in the book appeared in a series of articles published in Mathematics in School. Mathematics for the Multitude?
by The Mathematical Association

Why did Lewis Carroll attack the founders of the MA? Who proposed that salaries of mathematics teachers be doubled? The answers to these and many other questions can be found in this book which provides much more than a history of the Association's internal development, including the contributions of leading individuals since its formation. The Association's history is located within a broad context of changes in the educational system, developments in educational and mathematical thought, the growth of professionalism, and wider social, political and economic forces which influence the curriculum. As 'The Association for the Improvement of Geometrical Teaching' the MA was the first of the subject teaching associations to be formed in England, in 1871 . The book will be of interest not only to the mathematics education community, but also to historians of mathematics and education, and to all concerned with the dynamics of curriculum change.

Mathematics Problems Via Down Under
by The Mathematical Association

A collection of problems which have a range of difficulty. The main thrust of the books is to convey the non-skills face of mathematics to students, the creative side where human is pitted against problem to find a solution and then is seduced into extensions and generalisations. As well as the problems themselves, there is a Hints section (to give the mind a push), a Solutions Section (to show how they can be done) and, in many cases, a section indicatmg possible Extensions and Generalisations.
