Menstrual Cramps is just another term for Period Pain, which describes
what Period Pain can feel like.
Most sources refer to the cramping feeling of Primary Spasmodic
Dysmenorrhea, which is caused by an excess of a hormone caused Prostaglandin.
This causes contraction of the uterine muscle, producing reduction
in blood flow, and sensitises nerves endings.
Severe viselike pain, backache, tightening and pain sensations
in the inner thighs, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, faintness,
dizziness, fatigue, headaches.
Many women describe another set of symptoms:
Dull aching in low back and pelvis, bloating, weight gain, breast
tenderness, headaches, irritability
Excessive amounts of estrogen can worsen these symptoms, since estrogen
increases fluid and salt retention in the body.
An excess secretion of a different hormone can also worsen congestive
symptoms. Production of Adrenal hormones causes the kidneys to retain
fluid. As a result, women urinate less frequently in the time leading
up to menstruation. Once the menstrual period starts, this excess
fluid is released.
